The Easy English Book is a culturally sensitive visual dictionary designed to support language acquisition and social integration for immigrant women, particularly those from Muslim backgrounds in Belfast. Developed during a three-month residency at the Site-Specific College, Shankill School of Art, this adaptable, pocket-sized resource combines simple illustrations with key phrases for everyday scenarios, such as shopping, healthcare, and basic conversations.
The project emerged from hands-on workshops where participants> immediate needs shaped the content, ensuring practical relevance. By bridging linguistic and cultural gaps, the Easy English Book not only made abstract concepts relatable but also fostered confidence and engagement. Its art-based, inclusive approach respects diverse cultural backgrounds while raising awareness among the local community about the challenges faced by immigrants.
This project exemplifies the power of visual storytelling to create accessible, empowering educational tools that address real-world challenges with creativity and empathy.
